Crown Wheele has replaced furnaces in Valparaiso, Chesterton and Porter County since 1946. As a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer and Bryant warranty center with NATE-certified technicians, we give you an honest repair-or-replace answer, size the right system for your home, and install it with permits, safety testing and a local warranty. Three generations of Wheeles have kept Northwest Indiana homes warm through lake-effect winters. That history matters when you are deciding on a furnace that should last 15 to 20 years. We give you a straight answer on repair versus replacement, explain your options (high-efficiency gas, dual fuel or heat pump), and stand behind the installation from our shop and warehouse on Franklin Street, in downtown Valparaiso.

No heat right now? If your furnace has stopped working, call (219) 462-4328. Our local team answers 24/7. For common causes and safe checks, see our furnace repair page.

What Does Furnace Replacement Cost?

Should You Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

Replace your furnace when it is 15 or more years old and a repair would cost close to half the price of a new one, when it has needed several repairs in two heating seasons, or when a technician finds a cracked heat exchanger. If it is younger and the repair is minor, repair it, and we will tell you so.

Crown Wheele uses three questions to guide the decision:

  • How old is it? Most furnaces in Northwest Indiana last 15 to 20 years. Past 15, each major repair buys less time.
  • What will the repair cost compared with a new furnace? If the repair approaches 50% of the cost of replacement on an older system, replacement is usually the better long-term value.
  • Is it still safe and efficient? A cracked heat exchanger, repeated flame-sensor or ignition failures, or rising gas bills point toward replacement.

Not sure? Our furnace repair team diagnoses the problem first and shows you the results before recommending anything. If you already have a replacement quote from another company, we are glad to give you a second opinion.

How Long Does a Furnace Last in Northwest Indiana?

A well-maintained gas furnace in Northwest Indiana typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Lake-effect winters mean furnaces here run longer heating seasons than in southern Indiana, so annual maintenance and prompt repairs have a real effect on how long yours lasts.

About half of Valparaiso homes were built before 1980, and many still have furnaces installed in the 1990s or early 2000s. If your furnace is in that age range, it is worth planning a replacement on your schedule, not during a January cold snap. An annual tune-up is the best way to stretch the life of a newer system.

Signs Your Furnace Needs to Be Replaced

The clearest signs are age (15+ years), frequent repairs, rising gas bills, uneven heat from room to room, a yellow or flickering burner flame, rust or cracks on the furnace, and new noises such as banging or rattling. One sign alone may only mean a repair; several together usually mean replacement.

When Is the Best Time to Replace a Furnace?

The best time is before it fails: in early fall, before the first cold snap, when you have time to compare options and choose an installation date. Replacing a furnace in an emergency limits your choices. If yours is 15 years or older, plan the replacement now rather than in January.

Planning ahead also gives you time to check current NIPSCO rebates and financing options in our cost guide.

Cracked Heat Exchangers and Carbon Monoxide

A cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide into your home’s air, so it is treated as a safety problem, not a comfort problem. On an older furnace, a cracked heat exchanger is usually a reason to replace the furnace rather than repair it. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 or NIPSCO first, then call us.

Crown Wheele inspects the heat exchanger on every furnace tune-up and diagnostic visit and shows you what we find. Every home with a gas furnace should have working carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas. If you smell gas, leave immediately and call NIPSCO’s gas emergency line from outside.

Your Furnace Replacement Options

Valparaiso homeowners usually choose between three options: a high-efficiency gas furnace (95% AFUE or higher), a dual fuel system that pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace, or an all-electric heat pump. For most Porter County homes, a high-efficiency furnace or a dual fuel system is the best fit for our winters.

OptionHow it worksBest for
High-efficiency gas furnace (95%+ AFUE)Burns natural gas; condensing design turns 95 cents or more of every fuel dollar into heatHomes that want proven, powerful heat and NIPSCO’s gas furnace rebate
Dual fuel (heat pump + gas furnace)Heat pump heats efficiently in mild weather; furnace takes over automatically in deep coldHomeowners replacing both furnace and AC who want the lowest year-round operating cost
Heat pumpMoves heat from outdoor air into the home; also provides air conditioningHomes considering all-electric heating; best paired with backup heat in NWI

Crown Wheele brought heat pumps to Valparaiso in 2001, so we can give you an honest comparison. In Valparaiso, about 76% of the year is at or above 30°F, the range where a heat pump does most of its work efficiently. That is why dual fuel is so popular here. Learn more on our heat pump page or compare Bryant models on our Bryant dealer page.

Furnaces rated 95% AFUE or higher qualify for NIPSCO’s gas furnace rebate, and Crown Wheele can apply it as an instant discount at the time of sale. See current rebates in our cost guide.

Do Heat Pumps Work in Valparaiso Winters?

Yes. Modern heat pumps keep heating well below freezing, and about 76% of the year in Valparaiso is at or above 30°F. On the coldest days, a dual fuel system switches to the gas furnace automatically. In this short video, Crown Wheele answers one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners comparing a heat pump with a furnace.

Heat Pump vs. Furnace: What Maintenance Does Each Need?

Both need regular professional maintenance to run efficiently and last. A heat pump heats and cools, so it works year-round; a gas furnace works only in the heating season. Crown Wheele explains what heat pump maintenance involves and why it protects efficiency and lifespan. See our HVAC maintenance plans.

Should You Replace Your AC at the Same Time?

If your air conditioner is more than 10 to 12 years old, replacing it together with your furnace usually makes sense. The two systems share the blower and indoor coil, a matched system runs more efficiently, and you avoid paying for a second installation a few years later.

New air conditioners now use R-454B refrigerant, which is not compatible with older R-410A equipment. If your AC is aging, pairing it with the furnace replacement, or choosing a dual fuel system, avoids a mismatched system. See AC replacement for more.

Upgrades to Consider With a New Furnace

The most popular upgrade with a new furnace in Valparaiso and Chesterton is a whole-home air purifier. The Bryant Evolution air purifier installs in your ductwork and uses a long-lasting MERV 15 filter that Bryant rates to capture 95% of airborne particles. A furnace replacement is the easiest time to add one, because the ductwork connections are already being redone. Ask about it at your free estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions | Furnace Replacement Valparaiso

Replace your furnace when it is 15 years or older and the repair would cost close to half the price of a new furnace, when it has needed several repairs in the past two heating seasons, or when a technician finds a cracked heat exchanger. If the furnace is younger and the repair is minor, repair is usually the better choice. Crown Wheele diagnoses the problem first and gives you a straight recommendation either way.
A well-maintained gas furnace in Northwest Indiana typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Lake-effect winters mean longer heating seasons than in southern Indiana, so annual tune-ups and prompt repairs make a real difference in how long a furnace lasts.
Common signs include an age of 15 years or more, frequent repairs, rising gas bills, uneven heating, a yellow or flickering burner flame, rust or soot around the furnace, and error codes that keep coming back. One sign may only mean a repair; several together usually mean it is time to replace.
Usually, yes. A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into your home, so it is a safety issue. On an older furnace, replacement is almost always the better choice than repair. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 or NIPSCO before calling a contractor.
For many Valparaiso homes, a dual fuel system (a heat pump paired with a high-efficiency gas furnace) offers the lowest year-round operating cost, because the heat pump handles mild weather and the furnace takes over in deep cold. A high-efficiency gas furnace alone is a strong choice if your air conditioner is still in good shape. Crown Wheele compares both at your free estimate.
If your air conditioner is more than 10 to 12 years old, replacing it with the furnace usually makes sense. The two systems share the blower and indoor coil, a matched system runs more efficiently, and you avoid a second installation a few years later.
Most furnace replacements are completed in a single day, including removal of the old furnace, installation, startup and safety testing, and a walkthrough of the new system. Jobs that add a heat pump or change ductwork or venting can take longer, and Crown Wheele gives you the timeline at your estimate.
If you have been told your furnace needs replacing and you are not sure, a second opinion is reasonable, especially for a heat exchanger diagnosis. Crown Wheele will review the findings or another company's quote, inspect the furnace, and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
