A furnace is only as good as its installation. Sizing, venting, gas pressure and airflow decide how efficiently it runs, how quietly it heats and how long it lasts. Crown Wheele’s NATE-certified, Bryant factory-trained technicians install furnaces the way Bryant designs them to be installed, and as the local Bryant warranty center, we stand behind them here in Valparaiso.

What Does a New Furnace Cost?
Cost depends on furnace size, efficiency, venting and ductwork. See our Furnace Replacement Cost Guide for what is included and current NIPSCO rebates.

What a Proper Furnace Installation Includes
A proper installation includes a load calculation, correct venting and combustion air, a pitched and freeze-protected condensate drain, gas pressure checks, airflow testing, a combustion and carbon monoxide test, and a permit and inspection.
| Step | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Load calculation (Manual J) | Sizes the furnace to your home. Oversized furnaces short-cycle, waste gas and wear out sooner. |
| Duct and airflow check | Undersized returns or leaky ducts make even a new furnace noisy and uneven. |
| Venting and combustion air | High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC. Terminations must meet code clearances and, in Northwest Indiana, sit above the snow line. |
| Condensate drain | Condensing furnaces produce water. The drain must be pitched and protected from freezing. |
| Gas line and pressure | Correct gas pressure is essential for safe, efficient burning. |
| Startup testing | Combustion analysis, carbon monoxide check, temperature rise and safety controls verified before we leave. |
| Permit and inspection | Crown Wheele pulls the permit and coordinates the inspection. |
| Warranty registration | Bryant’s full parts warranty requires product registration, and Crown Wheele registers it for you. |
Sizing Your Furnace: Why the Old Furnace Is the Wrong Guide
The right furnace size comes from a load calculation of your home, not from the size of the furnace you have now. Many Valparaiso homes have furnaces that were oversized when installed or have since had new windows, insulation or additions that changed the heating load.
An oversized furnace heats in short bursts, creating hot and cold swings, more wear and higher gas use. An undersized furnace runs nonstop on the coldest nights. Crown Wheele measures your home and calculates the load before recommending a size.
Choosing a Furnace: AFUE, Stages and Blowers
Three features separate furnaces: efficiency (AFUE), how the burner runs (single-stage, two-stage or modulating), and the blower (fixed or variable speed). Higher efficiency lowers gas use; two-stage and modulating burners with variable-speed blowers give steadier, quieter heat.
| Bryant line | Burner and blower | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|
| Evolution® (e.g., Evolution 98) | Modulating burner, variable-speed blower for the quietest, most even heat | Up to 98.3% AFUE |
| Preferred™ (e.g., Preferred 96) | Two-stage burner that runs on low most of the time | Up to 96.5% AFUE |
| Legacy™ | Single-stage, entry level | 80% and 95%+ AFUE options |
Furnaces rated 95% AFUE or higher qualify for NIPSCO’s gas furnace rebate, which Crown Wheele can apply as an instant discount (current details in our cost guide). See the Bryant dealer page for the full lineup, or our cost guide for how each choice affects price.
Are 80% Efficiency Furnaces Being Phased Out?
Status reviewed October 2026.
Not yet. A U.S. Department of Energy rule requires new gas furnaces made after December 18, 2028 to be at least 95% AFUE, but it is back under court review and DOE is considering a request to delay it to at least 2030. Standard 80% furnaces are still sold and installed today.
For most Northwest Indiana homes, a 95%+ furnace is already the better long-term choice because of our long heating season. An 80% furnace can still make sense in some homes where condensing venting is impractical. Crown Wheele explains the trade-offs for your house at the estimate.
Additions, Conversions and New Homes
Crown Wheele installs furnaces in new homes and additions, and converts homes from propane, oil or electric heat to a natural gas furnace. These jobs need more planning (gas service, ductwork and venting) and usually take longer than a replacement, so we plan them at an on-site estimate.
- Propane to natural gas: requires NIPSCO gas service at the home; the furnace is converted or replaced to burn natural gas.
- Oil or electric heat to gas: new gas line, venting and often new ductwork.
- Boiler or baseboard to forced air: adds ductwork and creates a path for central air conditioning.
- Additions and finished basements: load calculation to decide whether the existing furnace can handle the new space, or whether a ductless system is better.
- New homes: furnace sizing, ductwork design and installation for new construction.
Permits and Inspection in Valparaiso and Porter County
Furnace installations in Valparaiso and Porter County require a mechanical permit and inspection. Crown Wheele applies for the permit and coordinates the inspection as part of the installation, so you do not have to.
Warranty: Bryant Parts and Crown Wheele Labor, Serviced Locally
Bryant furnaces installed by Crown Wheele carry a 10-year Bryant parts warranty and a 2-year Crown Wheele labor warranty. Because Crown Wheele is the local Bryant warranty center, warranty service is handled from our Valparaiso shop, not a national hotline.
Bryant requires documented regular maintenance to keep warranties valid. A Crown Wheele maintenance agreement keeps your records in order.
Furnace Installation in Chesterton
Crown Wheele installs Bryant furnaces throughout Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor and the Duneland area, about 12 miles from our Valparaiso shop. Heavier lake-effect snow near the lake makes vent placement and sizing especially important there.
See our Chesterton HVAC page for local service details.
