What Drives the Price, What’s Included, and How to Pay Less

Honest, All-In Furnace Pricing from Valparaiso's Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer

Reviewed by Andy Wheele, third-generation owner, Crown Wheele Heating & Air Conditioning · Updated October 27, 2026

Furnace replacement in Valparaiso ranges from a few thousand dollars for a straightforward swap to well over ten thousand for a high-efficiency or dual fuel system with venting or ductwork changes. Size, efficiency, venting, ductwork and whether the AC is replaced too set the price. Crown Wheele gives you one all-in written price at a free estimate.

The honest answer is that furnace cost varies more than most websites suggest, and a number from a website cannot see your basement, your venting or your ductwork. What we can show you is exactly what drives the price in Porter County homes, what Crown Wheele includes in every installation, how NIPSCO rebates lower the cost, and how to compare quotes fairly.

What Determines Furnace Replacement Cost in Valparaiso

Six factors set the price of a new furnace: the size your home needs, the efficiency rating (AFUE), the type of burner and blower, venting and gas line work, ductwork and air quality add-ons, and whether your air conditioner is replaced at the same time.

1. Furnace size and load calculation

Furnaces are sized in BTUs. The right size depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, windows and air leakage, not the size of the furnace you have now. Many older Valparaiso homes have oversized furnaces that short-cycle and waste gas. Crown Wheele sizes every furnace with a load calculation.

2. Efficiency rating (AFUE)

AFUE is the percentage of fuel that becomes heat. An 80% furnace wastes about 20 cents of every gas dollar up the flue; a 95%–98% condensing furnace wastes 5 cents or less. High-efficiency furnaces cost more upfront, qualify for NIPSCO’s furnace rebate, and lower gas bills over a long NWI heating season.

3. Single-stage, two-stage or modulating

A single-stage furnace runs at full blast every time. Two-stage and modulating furnaces (such as the Bryant Preferred™ and Evolution® lines) run at lower output most of the time, which means steadier temperatures, quieter operation and better efficiency, at a higher equipment cost.

4. Venting, gas line and water heater

Moving from an 80% furnace to a 95%+ condensing furnace changes the venting: the new furnace vents through PVC pipe and needs a condensate drain. If your gas water heater shares the old chimney flue, it may need its own liner or venting so it drafts safely. These are common in older Valparaiso homes, and Crown Wheele identifies them at the estimate.

5. Ductwork, returns and air quality

Undersized returns, leaky ducts or a new zoning layout add to the job but often fix long-standing comfort problems. Optional air quality add-ons (media filters, humidifiers, UV lights) are quoted separately so you can choose.

6. Furnace only, or furnace and AC together

Replacing the furnace and air conditioner together costs more on the day, but less than two separate installations, and it avoids pairing a new furnace with an aging AC coil. See should you replace your AC at the same time.

Is a High-Efficiency Furnace Worth It in Northwest Indiana?

For most Valparaiso homes, yes. Northwest Indiana’s long heating season means a 95%+ AFUE furnace uses roughly 15% to 18% less gas than an 80% furnace for the same heat. That difference adds up over the 15 to 20 years a furnace lasts.

An 80% furnace can still make sense for a home you plan to sell soon or where venting a condensing furnace is impractical. Crown Wheele shows you both options side by side at the estimate so you can decide.

Dual Fuel and Heat Pump Cost Compared with a Furnace

A dual fuel system costs more upfront than a furnace alone because it adds a heat pump, but it replaces your air conditioner at the same time and usually has the lowest year-round operating cost in Northwest Indiana. If your AC also needs replacing, the price gap is often smaller than homeowners expect.

How to Lower Your Furnace Replacement Cost

The biggest savings come from planning ahead: replace before the furnace fails, choose a 95%+ AFUE furnace that qualifies for NIPSCO’s rebate, pair the furnace and AC if both are aging, and compare all-in quotes rather than equipment-only prices.

  • Replace before it fails. An early-fall replacement lets you choose your system and date instead of taking what is available in a January emergency. See when to replace a furnace.
  • Use the NIPSCO rebate. 95%+ AFUE furnaces and qualifying heat pumps earn a rebate, taken off at the time of sale with the Instant Discount.
  • Replace furnace and AC together if both are aging. One installation costs less than two.
  • Maintain the new system. Annual maintenance protects your warranty and prevents costly repairs.
  • Ask about financing to spread the cost over time.

How to Compare Furnace Quotes

Furnace quotes vary mostly because they include different things. Before comparing prices, make sure each quote names the furnace model and AFUE, includes a load calculation, covers venting, permit, removal and startup testing, and states the labor warranty in writing.

  • What exact furnace model and AFUE rating is quoted?
  • Was the furnace sized with a load calculation?
  • Are venting changes, the condensate drain and any water heater venting included?
  • Is the permit included?
  • Is old-furnace removal and disposal included?
  • What labor warranty does the installer provide, and who handles manufacturer warranty claims?
  • Is the company a factory-authorized dealer for the brand it is installing?

Frequently Asked Questions | Furnace Replacement Cost Valparaiso

Furnace replacement in Valparaiso ranges from a few thousand dollars for a straightforward like-for-like swap to well over ten thousand for a high-efficiency or dual fuel system with venting or ductwork changes. The price depends on furnace size, efficiency rating, venting, ductwork and whether the AC is replaced too. Crown Wheele provides a free on-site estimate with one all-in written price. Crown Wheele's furnace price is all-in: the new Bryant furnace, installation labor, removal and disposal of the old furnace, venting and condensate connections, permit, thermostat setup, and startup and safety testing, plus a local labor warranty and Bryant parts warranty. Any extra work, such as a chimney liner or ductwork changes, is listed in the written quote before you commit.
Furnace quotes vary mostly because they include different things. Some quote equipment only; others include venting, permits, removal and startup testing. Efficiency level, furnace size and venting changes also move the price. Compare quotes by checking the furnace model and AFUE, whether a load calculation was done, and what labor warranty is included in writing.
For most Valparaiso homes, yes. A 95% AFUE or higher furnace uses roughly 15% to 18% less gas than an 80% furnace for the same heat, which adds up over Northwest Indiana's long heating season and the 15 to 20 years a furnace lasts. High-efficiency furnaces also qualify for NIPSCO's gas furnace rebate.
Yes. As of October 2026, NIPSCO offers a $250 rebate on natural gas furnaces rated 95% AFUE or higher, for equipment purchased and installed by November 30, 2026. Crown Wheele can apply it as an instant discount at the time of sale. Dual fuel customers can claim either the heat pump rebate or the furnace rebate, but not both. Check nipsco.com for current rules.
No. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (IRS Section 25C) ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025, so furnaces installed in 2026 do not qualify. Homeowners who installed a qualifying system in 2025 may still claim it on their 2025 return; check with your tax professional. NIPSCO rebates remain available.
Yes, upfront, because a dual fuel system adds a heat pump. But it also replaces your air conditioner and usually has the lowest year-round operating cost in Northwest Indiana. If your AC needs replacing too, the difference is often smaller than expected. Crown Wheele prices both options at your free estimate.
